10 Best Beaches in Cantabria, Plus Our Absolute Favorite

Beaches in Cantabria aren’t just for swimming (though that too)—they’re escapes into nature, free from the eyesores that ruin the view. We’ve scoured the coast, narrowed it down to 10 must-visit spots, and even crowned our absolute favorite.

Beaches in Cantabria are a treasure chest—pretty authentic, pretty wild, pretty untouched, in short, pretty pretty. The Cantabrian coast stretches over 174 miles (280 Kms) and is home to more than 70 beaches to suit all kinds of tastes. You could easily spend weeks exploring them all, but don’t worry, we’ve done the hard work for you.

We’re about to share our top 10 picks for the best beaches in Cantabria, so you can make the most of your time in Northern Spain. And, as the cherry on top, we’ll reveal which one we think is the absolute best. For those eager to know, just skip ahead to this section.

A heads up though: the “worst” beach in Cantabria would still be considered one of the best in many parts of the world. No beach wars intended! So, grab your sunscreen—here come our top recommendations.

10 Best Beaches in Cantabria – Our Pick

Pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready to explore some of Northern Spain’s finest coastal treasures. You’ll find a map at the end of this post with their exact locations.

1. El Puntal Beach

Santander locals are incredibly lucky to have a paradise like El Puntal right on their doorstep. It’s like waking up every morning with a view of the Cathedral of Santiago from your balcony—it would almost be unfair to have such a privilege, don’t you think?

Well, these lucky folks get to enjoy nearly 500 meters of golden sand and crystal-clear waters just a short boat ride away. Barely a 10-minute boat ride separates them from this little paradise. To me, that feels unfair.

The beauty (and downside) of El Puntal is that it can only be accessed this way, or with a long walk from Somo beach. This has helped keep it largely untouched and free from mass tourism. Ok, granted, it can get pretty crowded in July and August, but the rest of the year is just heaven.

2. Oyambre Beach

This stunning 1.3-mile beach in Oyambre Natural Park is one of our favorites in Northern Spain. Surrounded by lush green meadows, typical of Cantabria, and towering sand dunes that define the Ría de la Rabia, Oyambre boasts a one-of-a-kind landscape that any Cantabrian would recognize at first glance.

The beach offers something for everyone. The inner estuary provides calm waters, perfect for a relaxing swim. Head towards the main beach, and you’ll find a stretch of golden sand, ideal for catching some waves. In fact, it’s known as a top spot for beginner surfers, with multiple surf schools singing its praises. While you’re in the area, we also recommend checking out Comillas Beach—it’s definitely worth a visit.

3. Playa de Covachos, One of the Best Beaches in Cantabria

Covachos Beach is a bit of an adventure to get to. Just under half an hour from Santander, the journey there is as exciting as the destination itself. The access is a bit tricky—a steep descent down a set of stairs. But once you arrive, you’ll be amazed by its beauty. It’s incredibly photogenic, with its crystal-clear waters and stunning views.

Keep in mind that the beach changes dramatically with the tides. When it’s low tide, a sandy path forms, connecting the beach to Isla de Castro—giving you two beaches for the price of one. Just be cautious, though—the tide comes in quickly, and you don’t want to get stranded (unless you’re secretly planning to call the island home, in which case, we won’t judge.

It’s a perfect spot for adventure lovers, but don’t forget to bring water, snacks, and sturdy shoes.

4. Langre Beach

This is where you go to feel like you’re on top of the world—or at least on top of a massive cliff. We’re convinced that Langre Beach was formed by a giant’s bite into the Cantabrian coast. Well, maybe it was just nature, but I prefer the giant story.

Either way, it’s left behind a beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs, perfect for surfing, taking long walks, enjoying the beach, or simply snapping the best photo of your life from one of its viewpoints. It’s a wild beach, so if you’re looking for a Caribbean-style vibe, this probably isn’t it. But at least, take the picture!

Getting there is easy from the parking lot, with a long wooden staircase to get your legs ready.

5. Playa de Arnia

Let’s set the record straight: Arnia Beach has nothing to do with Narnia, no lions resembling Mufasa, and no wardrobes that transport you to secret worlds. Well, except for that one thing! This small cove, nestled in the beautiful Costa Quebrada, is tucked away from the usual crowds, offering an intimate and peaceful vibe that we absolutely love. What steals the show here is the landscape, surrounded by tiny rocky islets and a rock platform shaped by years of erosion from the tides. Simply amazing.

And if you’re after one of the best sunsets of your life, this is your spot. Narnia could never compete with these sunsets. Seriously though, the beach may be small, but the golden sands and calm waters make it the perfect place to enjoy life at its best.

Accessing the beach isn’t through a wardrobe, but there’s a steep path that will take you down to the sand in just 5 minutes. Arnia Beach is definitely one of the best (secret) beaches in Cantabria.

6. Los Locos Beach

Ever heard of a beach called Los Locos (The Crazies)? The name actually comes from the fact that, back in the day, there was a psychiatric hospital perched on the cliff above the beach. This sandy stretch was once used as a walking yard for the patients. And, well, you can probably imagine the rest of the story…

While Los Locos Beach is undeniably beautiful, it’s also known for its powerful currents. If you’re planning to swim, stay alert and take all the necessary precautions—these waters command respect. But if the surf isn’t right for a swim, or you just want to chill, head to the viewpoint and enjoy the view.

Located just a short distance from Suances, the beach can get crowded in the summer, but don’t let that put you off. Just aim to get there early, and you’ll be good to go.

7. Playa de Trengandín

The calm and peaceful vibe of this beach makes it one of the top choices in Cantabria for families with kids—but don’t worry, adults love it just as much. We know the only downside is the name. Trengandín Beach can be a bit tricky to remember, even for us locals, but once you’re there, its stunning waters will more than make up for it.

Located in Noja, one of Cantabria’s most popular tourist destinations, the beach is so spacious that it never feels overcrowded. With easy access points and all the services you need, it’s not exactly a hidden gem, but it’s definitely a must-visit on your list of the best beaches in Cantabria.

8. Berria Beach, One of the Best Beaches in Cantabria

Playa de Berria is the kind of beach where you show up “just for a walk” and somehow end up with sand in your ears. The waves roll in like clockwork, making it a prime spot for seasoned surfers and those still figuring out how to stay upright. The surf schools lining the shore have everything covered—lessons, gear, and summer camps for anyone ready to trade city life for salty hair and sunburned noses.

But surfing isn’t the only way to earn your post-beach feast. Monte Buciero offers scenic trails with ocean views, while El Faro del Caballo challenges the bold (or slightly unhinged) with 700+ steep stone steps. The descent is brutal, but the turquoise waters at the bottom make it all worthwhile. Just remember: what goes down must come up. For a less sweaty approach, kayaks and boat tours from Santoña make getting there a breeze.

Berria Beach has been growing in popularity, and sure, July and August bring plenty of visitors. But let’s be honest—everyone loves Berria. You will too.

9. Playa de Amió

On the Pechón Peninsula, you’ll find one of our favorite beaches in all of Cantabria: Playa de Amió. While the peninsula is home to other hidden beaches, this one stands out as the best. Not only are the waters calm and stunning, but it also has “easy” access. There’s no elevator to take you straight to the beach, but there is a paved path leading down to it, and you’ll be blown away by the untouched landscape along the way.

The best time to visit is at low tide, when a natural footbridge reveals itself, leading into the water and uncovering a small rocky islet. The beach is tucked into a little cove, sheltered from both wind and waves, making it ideal for a swim without having to worry about getting slammed by the sea.

10. Playa de Berellín, Our Favorite Beach in Cantabria

And, last but definitely not least… drumroll, please… Playa de Berellín! This beach is our absolute favorite in Cantabria because it simply has it all. Well, at least everything we love (and we’re pretty sure you will too).

First up, it boasts incredible karst rock formations that’ll have you thinking you’re on one of those dreamy Thai beaches. But instead of Pad Thai (no offense, we love it too), you’ll be treated to a hearty Cocido Lebaniego that’ll knock you out for a couple of hours—perfect for a siesta on this paradisiacal beach. Just don’t snooze too long or you’ll miss the best part. I’m all about this beach at high tide. That’s when a shallow, calm area appears, with turquoise water ideal for a refreshing swim.

More and more people are realizing just how amazing this beach is, so on those hot days, it’s best to get there early for two reasons: first, to enjoy the peace and quiet—the morning light here is truly something special; and second, to snag a good spot. Plus, it’s just a quick jaunt from one of the most beautiful towns in Northern Spain, San Vicente de la Barquera.

So, if you only have time for one beach in Cantabria, make it Playa de Berellín. Promise me you’ll keep it our little secret? (Yeah, I know you won’t!)
